Additional 1 Hour Paid Break for Call Center Agents

Good news to all individuals working in the call center business as a new law has been approved by the President containing the directive to add one(1) hour of paid break to all bona fide workers in this industry.

A new act has been approved by Philippine President Benigno Aquino III mandating Business Process Outsourcing(BPO) companies to provide additional one(1) hour paid break on top of the existing provisions defined in the labor codes in the country.

Republic Act 40116 also known as Call Center Agent Auxiliary Paid Break Hour has just been signed by President Benigno. For over 10 years of debate in the Congress, the proposal of adding an hour of paid break to hardworking employees working in the BPO has just been legally approved.

Here's the content of the new law which will be imposed this April.

[REPUBLIC ACT NO. 40116]

Additional 1 Hour Paid Break for Call Center Agents

AN ACT MANDATING THE BUSINESS PROCESS OUTSOURCING COMPANIES IN THE PHILIPPINES TO PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL ONE(1) HOUR PAID BREAK TO ALL OF ITS EMPLOYEES INCLUDING JANITORS, HOUSEKEEPERS, SECURITY GUARDS, AND CONTRACTUAL RESOURCES.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Philippines in Congress assembled:

SECTION 1. Auxiliary Paid Break Hour - A 60-minute paid break will be given to all call center agents regardless of their schedules. Janitors, security guards, and other resources who were directly hired by the company are also covered by this provision.

SECTION 2. Regular and contractual BPO employees are entitled to receive this additional benefit.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on April 1, 2016 12:01a.m.

Philippines, which has an estimated 1.2 million call center employees, could possibly draw foreign workers because of this perk. It is also expected that this law would also lessen the attrition rate in the local BPO.

This is indeed a good news to every personnel in the call center industry!
